Favicon is the acronym for ‘Favorites Icon’. This is the tiny image displayed at the beginning of the URL bar or address bar of browser. That icon is nothing but the small symbol of the whole web page or the site and thus is also reffered to as the pageicon or urlicon.

How to crate favicon.ico?

1. You should first consider the image size. It should be 16?16 pixels.
2. Save the image as ‘favicon.ico’.

Where to place favicon.ico?

Favicon.ico must be uploaded in the root directory of the web server so that it’s displayed automatically in the addres bar. If the image is uploaded elsewhere you shold specify its location with a tag in the webpage section.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of favicon.ico?

Using favicon makes your Favorites entry easier to find. However, only newer versions of Internet Explorer show icon in the Favorites. Also, once the browser cache is cleaned, the icon disappears.
